Edinburgh University Medieval Society

Tablet Weaving Workshop

1. Draw pattern on grid which has the same number of columns as you want cards to weave with... and four rows for four hole cards. The labels a,b,c,d on the cards correspond to the labels on the grid.

3. Put the two sets of cards together, being careful to keep threads and holes aligned.

5. Attach one end of wool to fixed point and the other to your belt so you can adjust tension as you weave

2. Thread the cards according to the grid pattern. Equal numbers of cards on
each side should be threaded in opposite directions, so as to make the twist on the braid symmetrical.

4. Use the tablets to comb out the threads and get the tension even.

6. Rotate the set of cards by 90 degrees then pass thread through to weave. Doing four 90 degree turns forward then four backward will produce a chevron pattern.
